CIFC: Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome AwarenessThe March/April Check in for Charity is brought to you by our members, Wes. Wes was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the age of 7. As a child Wes struggled with things most of us take for granted, such as: attending school, playing sports, going shopping, etc.

Fortunately, his parents spent countless hours meeting with school administrators to ensure that staff and students were educated on his condition. This included what Tourette syndrome is and what it looked like from Wes’ point of view. It was important that his classmates knew to treat him like they would anyone else and to understand that he had no control over the movements or sounds he made.

He has tried many different medications and therapies, but it remains a work in progress because there is still much more research to be done and new therapies to be tested. As an adult Wes feels compelled to be an advocate for others with Tourette Syndrome and to keep a positive attitude.

Continued support and awareness for Tourette Syndrome is important for the health and well-being of many children and young adults throughout our community and country. Tourette Syndrome not only impacts the child and their family but all those around them in everyday life. Your Check-ins will help others like Wes in our community who struggle with Tourette Syndrome.
