How long have you been coming to Strength in Numbers?
I started early December 2018.
Do you remember your first workout?
Yes! It was a Saturday morning Bootcamp with Jamie! I loved it. The energy was so great! I didn’t know anyone but I could tell these were people I wanted to get to know!
How would you describe you lifestyle before Strength in Numbers? How would you describe it now?
I have always enjoyed working out and am pretty self-motivated, but definitely like classes more than solo workouts. I love a challenge and it’s more rewarding to push myself harder in a group setting. I find that I need to be very structured with my calorie tracking if I want to stay in the shape I want. It’s easier for me to be motivated about calorie tracking if I have a good exercise routine.
I was going to a boutique gym set up like SIN but it closed in 2016. I missed the comradery and motivation you get from group classes. I joined a big box gym and signed up for small group training, then bought passes to three other places to try to get all diversity of classes I wanted. It was expensive, and I really didn’t find the connection I missed with working out with the same people all the time, and the encouragement from coaches.
When one of the places I was going to for two different classes closed, one of the coaches told me about SIN. I signed up for a free class and was hooked! The energy and encouragement at SIN is amazing! I don’t think I’m working out any more or less since I joined SIN but I’m definitely enjoying my workouts more and love the new connections I’ve made!
How are you staying motivated at home during quarantine?
The streaming classes, and everyone’s posts have given me so much motivation! Oh, and the challenges! I’m particularly loving the pushup challenge. It’s something I have struggled with and I can feel the progress. It’s very rewarding to see all the supporting comments everyone gives everyone. The variety of classes has been amazing.
Also, in January, I started Weight Watchers. Right when quarantine started I was just around 10 pounds down. Two weeks ago I hit my goal weight (a total of 15 pounds). I would hate to go backwards and gain it all back before quarantine is over! It’s not easy sticking to calorie tracking while sitting at home but if I start the day with a great workout (or am looking forward to one later in the day) it keeps me wanting to stay on track with my eating.
If I ever feel unmotivated, all I need to do is look at all the amazing posts from the SIN group!
If you could design your perfect workout what would it be?
Hm… I really love bootcamp, but kickfit is great too! Likely it would be a YGIG bootcamp or a class when we have small groups working together.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of starting at Strength in Numbers?
Definitely give it a try! There are so many great options! The coaches are great at making sure everyone has options for their skill level but give the right push to keep people challenged. The support from all the SIN members makes it such a safe and inviting place.
